What Do I Wear To A Boudoir Shoot? | Halifax Boudoir Photographer

One of the most common questions I get from boudoir clients upon booking is: what do I wear?! Some clients feel that there aren’t enough options and others feel that there are way too many. It can also be difficult to figure out what is most flattering for each individual’s body type, and how each outfit will photograph.

First and foremost, ANYTHING can be sexy as long as you feel sexy in it! I’ve had clients bring everything from teeny tiny bra and underwear sets, to loose sweaters and long socks. The sky is the limit when it comes to outfits for your session, but I’ve laid out some general tips and examples below to help decide what fits your style, and your body, best.

Some general things to keep in mind:

  • Red/maroon, black, white/off white, and nude tones all photograph really well and look "timeless"

  • High-waisted underwear are very trendy right now, and help keep you from feeling too bare!

  • Make sure whatever you purchase fits properly, meaning it doesn't dig in, have an overflow in the cups, etc.

  • Baby dolls can look outdated; a chemise or a teddy is a great alternative.

  • Make sure you are choosing things you are comfortable in! If you don’t feel comfortable and confident in your outfit choice, you won’t have as much fun (and it will show in your photos).

Now let’s talk outfits. Bodysuits are universally flattering, and come in tons of styles - they are also easy to find! They’re one of my favorite things to photograph and offer a variety of coverage options. You can click the images below for purchase information (in stock at time of this post).

Garter belts and suspenders, matched with thigh-high stockings, are so classically sexy and can offer additional coverage over a matching bra/panty set:

Bralettes are a cheap way to add extra options to your outfits, and come in everything from pretty lace to seductive and strappy:

Then there’s the classic bra/underwear combo - this can be done a few different ways (anything from a thong to high-waisted undies) and can be layered with a cardigan, robe, or even a badass leather jacket:

Teddies photograph very romantically, and are a perfect choice for bridal boudoir:

In addition to the lingerie options I’ve linked above, there’s a lot of things that can be used for layering. I love cheeky shorts, extravagant robes, cardigans, or flowy tanks. Here are some examples of pieces you can easily layer:

The most important thing when choosing what you’ll wear to your session is: do YOU love it? The outfit that is going to look best, is the one you feel best in! I hope this list of outfit ideas help you plan for your upcoming session. Happy shopping!
